Salary, dividends and personal tax checked before you pay yourself
Salary, dividends and personal tax planning for professional services directors who want each payment checked before the year end.
The split chosen at incorporation may no longer fit the company. Being the only person on payroll can also put the £10,500 employment allowance out of reach. Fiscal Umbrella reviews the whole position before the next payment.
Fiscal Umbrella is a Luton accountancy and tax practice for professional services limited companies. It reviews salary, dividends, spouse payroll and Self Assessment for a fixed fee agreed in writing, with Fasih Khan ACCA handling the advice.

What changes when director pay is checked early
Choose each payment before taking it
Decide between salary and dividends using the company’s current year-end position.
See personal tax before it lands
Estimate the director’s Self Assessment position before another dividend is declared.
Check every available payroll allowance
Confirm whether the people on payroll put employment allowance within reach.
Where an old pay setup starts costing you
Director pay can stay unchanged long after the company has grown.
- Dividends
“I still use the salary and dividend split we chose when the company started, and nobody has reviewed it since.”
An old split can increase the combined company and personal tax position. It can also leave dividends disconnected from available profit.
- Hire
“My spouse helps in the business, but nobody has checked whether payroll should reflect the work they do.”
The company may be missing a payroll option that fits how the business already operates.
- Tax bill
“I only discover my personal tax bill when the return is ready and the dividend has already been spent.”
That removes the chance to plan the payment. It can also leave company cash covering a personal surprise.
- Day 90
What changes once the pay advice is in the room?
Salary and dividends are considered before money leaves the company. Payroll is checked against who works in the business. Self Assessment becomes a planned cost rather than a late calculation.

If your accountant can’t explain your pay mix, forecast your personal tax before it lands, and reply this week, you have the wrong accountant
Answer these three questions about the advice your current accountant provides.
Question 1 of 3
Could they explain this week why your current salary and dividend mix still fits?
Could they estimate your personal tax before you take the next dividend?
Could they confirm whether your payroll setup qualifies for employment allowance?
Those are material gaps in how your pay is handled. The set-up review is the next step before another payment is made.
Some advice is already happening, but one decision remains unchecked. The payroll proof below shows why that missing check matters.
Your accountant is covering the main decisions at the right time. Use the guides when you want to test a future change.
What filing alone leaves undecided about your pay
Year-end filing completes the return, while pay decisions need attention before money leaves the company.
Year-end filing
Salary already paid is reported through payroll.
Dividends already taken appear in the accounts.
Self Assessment calculates the resulting personal tax.
The return reflects decisions made earlier in the year.
Planning during the year
Salary and dividends are reviewed before payment.
Spouse payroll is considered where it fits the business.
Employment allowance eligibility is checked before payroll is finalised.
Personal tax is estimated while the payment can still change.
Eight checks before your next salary or dividend
A yes to each question means the main decisions are being covered.
- 01
Is your salary and dividend mix reviewed before the company year end?
It should reflect the company’s current profit, cash and corporation tax position.
- 02
Has anyone checked whether being the only employee blocks employment allowance?
Single-director payroll can leave the allowance out of reach.
- 03
If your spouse works in the business, are their role and payroll set up properly?
Payroll should reflect the work they actually do for the company.
- 04
Do you decide dividends using current profit, tax and cash information?
A bank balance alone doesn’t show whether a dividend should be declared.
- 05
Are dividend vouchers and company decisions completed when dividends are paid?
Each dividend should be supported when the payment is made.
- 06
Is your personal tax estimated before you take another dividend?
The likely payment should be known before the money is spent.
- 07
Does payroll match the amount you actually take as salary?
The reported salary and the payment leaving the company should agree.
- 08
Is the director’s Self Assessment prepared alongside the company year end?
Reviewing both together shows how company decisions affect personal tax.
What the pay and tax work covers next
The work follows each payment from the company payroll to the director’s return.
Salary and dividend planning
Review how and when the director takes money before the next payment.
Spouse payroll and allowances
Check who works in the company and whether the payroll setup still fits.
Director Self Assessment
Prepare the return with the company year end and explain the expected payment.
Entry 01
The payroll check that can change the answer
One question about who is on payroll can alter the available options.
What clients say
How the first review turns into a workable plan
Each stage moves one pay decision from assumption to an agreed action.
Your current pay setup is mapped
Fasih reviews salary, dividends, payroll and the director’s latest Self Assessment position.
The next payment has a reason
The company decides how the director should be paid before money is transferred.
Payroll reflects the people involved
Spouse payroll and employment allowance are checked against how the company operates.
Personal tax is planned alongside year end
The expected Self Assessment position is considered before further dividends are declared.
Who this pay review is built to help
It is for trading limited companies whose directors need salary, dividends and personal tax reviewed together.
Sole traders, partnerships and LLPs aren’t taken on through this service.
Companies looking only for the lowest filing price won’t be a fit.
The company must be willing to use recommended payroll or bookkeeping software.
The intake quiz checks the fit before the set-up review is offered.
Questions to answer before changing how you pay yourself
What does the monthly fee include for salary, dividends and personal tax?
The written proposal sets out the agreed work. For a limited company, it can cover year-end accounts, corporation tax, VAT, bookkeeping, payroll and the director’s Self Assessment. Salary and dividend planning is included when agreed in scope. The fee is fixed in writing before work starts.
Can Fiscal Umbrella review our pay if we already have an accountant?
Yes. The pay and tax review can be completed while your current accountant still handles the filings. Fasih checks salary, dividends, payroll and Self Assessment together. If the review finds an issue, you can decide whether your current accountant should fix it or whether switching makes more sense.
Do we have to move payroll or bookkeeping software?
Not automatically. Fiscal Umbrella first checks whether the current software can support accurate payroll, bookkeeping and year-end work. When a change is needed, the proposal explains why. Xero, QuickBooks, Hubdoc and Dext setup and training can be included where they fit the company.
What happens with our current accountant if we switch?
Fiscal Umbrella contacts the current accountant, requests the company information and handles the professional handover. The aim is to keep payroll, accounts and tax filings moving while responsibility changes. The scope and fixed fee are agreed in writing before any work starts.
How does salary dividends and personal tax planning work?
Fasih reviews what the company can afford to pay, the director’s current salary, dividends already declared and the likely Self Assessment position. The next payment is then considered before it is made. The review also checks payroll and employment allowance where they apply.
Can employing my spouse change the company payroll position?
It can where the spouse genuinely works in the business and payroll reflects that role. For a company with only one person on payroll, adding an eligible family member can put employment allowance back in reach. Fasih checks whether the arrangement fits before any payroll change is made.
