Income tax calculator
What a salary is actually worth once tax, National Insurance, pension and student loan come out, for 2026/27 in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland. Worth a look before you change your own pay or put someone new on the payroll.
How this calculator works
- Enter the gross annual salary and choose where the person lives, because Scotland runs its own income tax bands.
- Add a pension contribution and a student loan plan if they apply, since both come out before the money reaches the bank.
- The result breaks the salary down into tax, National Insurance and take-home pay, so you can see what a rise or a new salary level really leaves behind.
What it cannot see
This only looks at a salary. It knows nothing about the dividends you draw from your own company, rental income, interest, a spouse already on the payroll, losses carried forward or the allowances your company can claim. It also ignores the corporation tax side completely, so the salary that looks best here is not always the mix that leaves you better off once both sides are added up.
Check how you pay yourself
Answer a few quick questions and I will tell you whether your company is the sort we work with. If it is, the free pay and tax review looks at your salary and dividend mix, employing a spouse and the employment allowance against your own numbers.
