Capital gains tax on shares calculator
Put in what you sold and what you paid for it, and see the gain and the tax that sits behind it before you sign anything. Founders selling a company can apply Business Asset Disposal Relief and compare the two results.
How this calculator works
- Enter what you sold, shares, crypto, a business or another asset, along with the date and the sale proceeds.
- Add what you originally paid plus the costs of buying and selling, and tell it whether Business Asset Disposal Relief applies to the disposal.
- The result is the chargeable gain and the tax on it at current rates, so you know roughly what to set aside before the money is spent.
What it cannot see
The calculator only knows what you type in. It does not know your salary and dividends for the year, gains or losses you have already made, losses carried forward from earlier years, shares bought in stages at different prices, or whether your shareholding and your time in the company actually meet the conditions for Business Asset Disposal Relief. Any one of those moves the final number, sometimes a long way.
Check your own position before you sell
Answer a few quick questions about your company and what you are planning, and I will tell you whether we are a fit. If we are, the free review comes next and we look at the sale, the reliefs and how you pay yourself together, while there is still time to change the answer.
