Stamp duty on shares calculator

Shares in a company change hands when a director buys out a partner or an investor sells on. Put the price in and see what the buyer owes on the transfer, and when nothing is payable at all.

How this calculator works

  • Enter what the buyer is actually paying for the shares, in money or anything else of value given for them.
  • The result is the duty the buyer pays on that transfer, worked out on the rate for 2026/27 shown on this page and rounded the way HMRC rounds it.
  • Tell it if the transfer is one of the exempt kinds, such as a gift with nothing paid for it, and the result shows that nothing is due.

What it cannot see

It only looks at the transfer in front of it. It does not know whether the seller has a gain to report, whether the company is buying its own shares back rather than a person buying them, whether the price reflects what the shares are really worth, or how the buyer and seller pay themselves out of the business afterwards. Those answers change the paperwork and the tax, so settle them before anyone signs.
