Accountants for solicitors: a first quarter plan for pay and tax
Accountants for solicitors help practice companies and consultants plan salary, dividends, personal tax and corporation tax before year end.
The question is whether anyone has checked how you pay yourself since incorporation. Fiscal Umbrella reviews the whole position, then handles accounts, payroll and deadlines around that decision.
Fiscal Umbrella is a Luton accountancy and tax practice for solicitors operating through growing limited companies. Fasih Khan, ACCA qualified, handles accounts, corporation tax, payroll and director tax planning for one fixed fee agreed in writing.

What changes once your pay is reviewed
Choose salary and dividends before year end
Base each withdrawal on the company and personal tax position instead of last year’s routine.
Check whether payroll is missing an allowance
Review who is employed and whether the current payroll keeps employment allowance out of reach.
Make hires with tax already allowed for
See the likely corporation and personal tax position before committing company cash.
Which pay decisions are still waiting for advice?
Small decisions around dividends, payroll and hiring can change how much cash remains available.
- Dividends
“I took the usual dividend, then found the personal tax was higher than I had set aside.”
The withdrawal was decided before anyone checked the year-end position. That can leave personal tax competing with practice costs.
- Hire
“I kept myself as the only person on payroll because nobody discussed employing my spouse.”
That can leave employment allowance out of reach and keep an old salary and dividend mix in place.
- Tax bill
“The corporation tax amount arrived after I had already committed the cash to a new solicitor.”
The hire then competes with a bill that should have been discussed earlier.
- Day 90
What changes once the advice is in the room?
The dividend is planned before year end. Payroll matches the agreed salary. Corporation tax and personal tax are discussed before cash leaves the company.

If your accountant can’t explain your VAT treatment, forecast your tax bill before it lands, and reply this week, you have the wrong accountant
Answer these questions based on what your current accountant already covers.
Question 1 of 3
Could they tell you this week whether your current VAT treatment is right?
Could they estimate your company and personal tax before the bills arrive?
Could they answer a pay or hiring question this week?
The gaps affect decisions you make before year end. The set-up review is the next place to check them together.
Some important work is already covered. Check the missing area, especially payroll, because single-director companies can miss the £10,500 employment allowance.
Your accountant is covering the decisions that matter. The guides can help you prepare better questions before your next review.
What changes beyond the year-end filing?
A filing service can meet deadlines while leaving pay decisions untouched.
A year-end filing service
Accounts and returns are prepared after the year closes.
Payroll follows the setup already in place.
The tax bill appears when the work is finished.
Questions outside the filing scope may wait.

The missed decisions are identified
Answer a few quick questions, receive a personalised recommendation and, if there is a fit, arrange the free review.
Your company files start moving
Fiscal Umbrella contacts your current accountant and checks accounts, payroll, HMRC access and upcoming deadlines.
Your pay plan is agreed
Salary, dividends, employment allowance and personal tax are reviewed against how the practice company operates.
Tax decisions happen before deadlines
Payroll follows the agreed plan, filings are scheduled and tax is discussed before company cash is committed.
Who this process fits, and where it stops
Sole traders, partnerships and LLPs fall outside this service.
Companies that need to defer fees until trading improves aren’t a fit.
Directors must provide information and use recommended bookkeeping or payroll software.
Firms choosing an accountant solely on price won’t suit this way of working.
If those points are covered, the free set-up review checks the rest before any switch.
What solicitors ask before changing accountant
What does the monthly fee for accountants for solicitors include?
Your monthly fee can cover year-end accounts, corporation tax, payroll, bookkeeping, VAT and the director’s Self Assessment. The exact scope depends on your practice company. Fiscal Umbrella reviews how you pay yourself, then sets out every included service in a fixed fee proposal before work starts.
Can we speak to Fiscal Umbrella if we already have an accountant?
You can use the free pay and tax review before deciding whether to change. Fasih checks your salary, dividends, employment allowance and year-end position. If there is a fit, you receive a fixed fee proposal in writing. Nothing moves until you accept it.
Do we have to change our accounting software?
Fiscal Umbrella supports Xero and QuickBooks, with Hubdoc or Dext where suitable. A change is only suggested when your current setup cannot support accurate bookkeeping, payroll or filings. The reason is explained first, and setup and training can be included in the written scope.
What happens with our current accountant when we switch?
Fiscal Umbrella contacts your current accountant, requests the company files and handles professional clearance. Payroll, accounts and filing dates are checked during the handover so work continues. Your old accountant may need authority from you before releasing information, and Fasih will tell you what is needed.
Can a solicitor’s company claim employment allowance?
A company with only its director on payroll cannot claim the £10,500 employment allowance. Adding a family member to payroll can put it back in reach. Eligibility depends on the payroll setup and the work being done, so the position should be checked before anyone is added.
Do accountants for solicitors need to be near our office?
Fiscal Umbrella is based in Luton and works remotely by default using Zoom, Teams, phone and WhatsApp. Face-to-face meetings are available by appointment in Luton. The service suits directors who are comfortable working online and providing company information when requested.
