National Insurance calculator

Put in a salary and see what it really costs the company once employer National Insurance is added, and what the person actually takes home after their own. The Employment Allowance is included where it applies.

How this calculator works

  • Enter the salary you are thinking of paying and say whether the person is an employee or a director.
  • Add self-employed profits if you want the Class 4 side, and tell it whether your company can claim the Employment Allowance.
  • The result separates what comes out of the person’s pay from what the company pays on top, which is the number you need before you agree a wage or a raise.

What it cannot see

The calculator only knows the salary you type in. It does not know about your dividends, other income the person already has, a pension paid through the company, when in the year someone joined the payroll, or whether another company you control has already used the Employment Allowance. Change any of those and the real answer moves, sometimes by more than you would expect.

Check what your own salary costs

Answer a few quick questions and I will tell you whether your company is one we can help. If it is, the free pay and tax review comes next and we go through how you pay yourself against your own numbers.
